All the way with Australia Day!
January 26th 2008 15:43
I'm surprised I did this much on a day that drunken patriots choose to get more drunk than usual.
The highlight for me was not really Australian, it was Belgian. A doozy of a bar which goes by the name of Belgian Beer Cafe. These guys sell fermented barley at twice the volume of alcohol and twice the price, and I was so satisfied with the imported produce that I decided to end the night in the state of bliss that a peaceful watering hole with unique and tasty beer can leave a person with.
The day started as we converged upon a crowded beach in the Eastern Suburbs and swam in the surprisingly warm (anyone remember the 14 degrees last summer?) water, and soaked up a bit of summer sun amidst the soon-to-be chaos that Coogee Beach is infamous for.
We got out of there in time to catch the live music at Circular Quay. These are the kind of acts I'd like to say "Don't get fresh with me, mister" to as they don't really provide anything inspiring for the rest of the masses. But the swarming crowds loved the guys (Evermore, Youth Group etc), and I would like to put that fact on Something For Kate being on the bill.
Kneivel, Pollyanna, You Am I, such was the brilliance of Sydney's musical heyday. Hope to see a resurgence soon.
So as people started dropping to the floor like drunken vinegar flies and walking around with minimal directional skills yelling en masse "aussieaussieaussieoi!oi!oi!" we finished up our first taste of alcohol for the night and did a bit of crawling around the Rocks.
It's a shame really, the pubs and cafes that are really worth checking out around there are so low key that they had pretty much closed for business at this time.
So we end up at the Belgian Beer Cafe.
The service there is great. And even the pissed yobbos seem to calm down and act civilised is there.
Mind you, I think the only interesting thing about Belgium is its beer.
And chocolate.
But then I don't really know. I'm just another drunk Australian. I hope you all had a happy holiday!
