Cafe Music
June 13th 2007 07:20
Sitting at Lorenzini's for lunch, I realise the importance of music to such a scene. Its simple Afro-American soul they're playing, something that can be kinda boring on its own. In this setting it seems ideal as I chow down a warm foccacia with an average coffee.
One of SMH's music critics, Bernard Zuel, trod all over Bebel Gilberto claiming her music to be 'squeezed from a tube of cafe music'. I suppose any press is good press - not so when it comes to coffee - as I find myself interested in checking out some of her music.
Maybe the music will transport me to a Cafe-in-Brazil vibe.
Not expecting much, I bought her 7 year old debut, Tanto Tempo. Aside from noting how little I still know of the Brazilian language, the style of the music - the body language of the voice and instruments - is quite the rapturous experience.
Although I'd prefer it to be with a more jazzy edge, its notably music with an international appeal and cross-cultural tranquility. At times eclectic, other times in need of a hammock, I'd agree with BZ in saying its ideal for the city-side cafes that do relatively well while staying low key.
Gilberto does do relatively well, this album got her nominated for a Grammy. At the same time I hadn't heard of her before the coffee flavoured toothpaste reference.
Check out her myspace page if you like.
Like most lowkey cafes, she has a strong and attractive following. I think this line of people in Australia are too busy hiring house music Djs to care about this stuff, but every artist has their niche. Europeans are more susceptible to Bebel Gilberto than the rest of the world, along with laid back Latin Americans.
I'll pretend to be the latter.
4 out of 5. Lost one for lack of breadth in emotion.

You could so pass as....
And no friands??
How've you been buddy?
Excellent review. I like these. You should do more. In fact....you should do these for cafe mags...coffee magazines...there's many. And you should get paid to do them.

Now the above is what comments were made for...
Sent the screenplay to that cinematographer yesterday, wish me luck.
She does have a creative well-known-in-Brazil family, you're probably right about Astrud.
See ya round,

Isn't lunch latin or something for "relax and enjoy"?
Dusk,
Thanks for the added optimism
Lilla,
I could be a bit paranoid and say by now you'll probably be able to track down a copy of the screenplay over the net, that which I sent off via email last week.
But I won't.
Hope your all having an enjoyable weekend, regardless of the weather.
I could go a ham and cheese crossant right now...

Did you get 'August Day Song'? That's probably my favourite on the album.
Right now, if I were to describe my musical taste, that song would be one of three or so that I would mention.
Thanks for coming by everyone, I realise this kind of response is rare for me...
... I guess I can have a problem with tone after spending time writing in character(s)... aka screenplays.
Luv ya's n all that,
