Dig Your Own Hole

1997.
Due to the explosion of the hiphop underground, me and everyone else in my life find ourselves overlooking an important revolution happening on street level. This revolution can be summed up in three words: The Chemical Brothers.
I remember hearing the song they did with Noel Gallagher (of Oasis), and the buzz associated with the song at the time. It was classic, but us wannabe emcees - mostly just emcees now - didn't find it fitting in with our regularly programmed schedule of skateboarding, marijuana and fresh-as-it-could-ever-be beats and rhymes.
2007.
I had the song 'Setting Sun' in my head at work this morning, although I hadn't heard it for at least half a decade. As I was singing it, I realised that the album was probably something missing in my collection. So I buy it.
On the surface its your typical one liner songs which make up most of the lyrics as well as the tracks. Turns out there's alot more in there. From the high-octane funk-psychedelia of 'get up on it like this' to the anthemic electro-funk of 'block-rockin beats' this album defines what the nineties was all about for alot of people. I guess I'll just have to relive the hype without the crowd.
There's references to drugs in here (ask me if you don't know what 'lost in the k-hole' means), but this album doesn't have a warning stamp. It may well encourage and evoke drug-riddled dancefloors and hangovers. It may also make you just wanna relax and bop your head.
I'll choose the latter, you can do what you want with it.
So damn close to 5 out of 5 that I may need to rethink rating this album and take a chill pill. Hey, heyyy... watchu got in there?

Ketamine, aka Special K, is horse tranquilizer which is used as a 'party drug'. I think its passed its heyday by now. It has one known effect on the brain. Its kinda like inverted tunnel vision, where it feels like you've fallen into 'your own hole'. And that's the k-hole.
So how's the friendly neighbourhood Rugby journalist going? Are you pumped for your premiere tomorrow?
Your friendly neighbourhood music reviewer,
Opto
