Ode to the 389

February 14th 2008 04:53
You know, the bus route that goes through the backstreets of East Sydney, Paddington, Woollhara and Bondi. That 389.

I was heading home from the city, feeling a little groggy from the night before. I was already talking to a friend who was on the bus before me, and some mother talking about the weather.

Then, on came a bloke with an MTV award. I guess he felt like getting in the midst of the action as he sat across from me. I said "Congratulations."

"It must be nice to get recognition every so often."

So in we leapt with a conversation about the Australian Music Industry, and being a muso in general. Turns out he's a guitarist for some dance act.

I then wondered out loud what happened to Paul Mac, to which he replied, "Yeah he's in Sliverchair now." I made it known how great it was to see Sneaky Sound System become another (sort of) rags to riches story. Well, definitely grass roots.

I also mentioned Hilltop Hoods seem to have blown up all over the joint. He said they might be starting a new label, adding "Shame its hiphop though" with a cheeky smile.

The poker face reigns supreme.

Turns out that many of us were sacrificing performing last year in order to get some quality time in our favourite studio. I mentioned that I hadn't been on a stage for about a year, adding that performing can be a bit like riding a bike. Once you get the hang of it, you never forget.

I went as far as saying something along the lines of, "Regardless of how nervous you feel before hand, all you need is the thought of how it felt the last time you tore the roof off."

He seemed to have a different idea.

Anyways, you can bet he didn't get off the bus without a mention of where to find my music, which is on the other site, so I might be lucky in him not finding out about me writing on our little convo on this site.

I didn't catch his name, or the group he plays with, all I know is he's a successful Australian musician. And with that knowledge we kept each other entertained for the majority of the bus ride home.

Talking to interesting strangers on the bus. I recommend it.
