The Addictive Personality
January 7th 2007 02:08
You should have seen this place. One half for eating, dancing and pool tables - the other pokies. And you know where the smokers are expected to go.
I have never gambled in my life, and if I did it sure as hell wouldn't be on the pokies. Sitting in front of one, having a cigarette, I realise I am supposed to be tempted.
I think of all the people I know who have given in to the temptation. They don't have to be low on cash, but the one's that are end up blowing the money on them before a big night out, and henceforth missing out on the big night out.
You can lend them money for the night, but no second guessing what they spend it on - if spending is the word. There are also the people who already have money, and are doing it for the thrill. See if their luck is up for the night - and it is when THEY run out of money. It was their shout as well.
There's nothing fair dinkum about gambling - I think its more an Irish than Australian sport. So why is it so popular here? Has it simply been forced upon us? It definitely does ruin lives, at least till the next pay check. And when that pay check is spent on the same thing, you realise it is also an addiction.
The one is enough, thanks.

.. aah, could it be a resilient strain of convict mentality ... or, a belief in poverty as a sure entry ticket to heaven perhaps?
... or is it just that the human being is prone to addictive nature, the thrill, and something to do with neuro-chlorine-peptide levels or something?
I don't gamble and yet I think marraige is a lottery too ... never really know what you're gonna get 10 years down the track, do you?
Sadly, it can all ruin lives, can't it?
good post.

Ash, you are looking at about 1 person a month getting pinged for raiding their employer's till just in Victoria alone.
Hate to break it to you Oppy but gambling is VERY Australian.
The Irish, whilst happy to punt, don't have a public holiday for a race.
In fact the Poms are bigger on the tote than the Paddys.
And the Scots and Welsh are just too tight.

DS, I guess you've got a point
Hi Lilla, you've got some good points there. Nice to see you here. I'm not sure if there's such thing as neuro-chlorine-peptine levels, but there probably is some kind of adrenaline rush involved in winning other peoples money.
JB, I know. Call me "unAustralian" at will. Public holiday for a race? You must be from Melbourne.
Have you heard of the saying, "Luck of the Irish"? Is luck not involved?

Yeah I realise that it is a major crisis, around the world, but was using her as an example as she was recently in the news - forgive me for not being clearer.

I am too. It keeps dragging me back for more. There needs to be blogging psychiatrists, methinks.
At least our physical health isn't threatened..is it?
