The Ice Cream Scoop
April 8th 2007 04:20
To write, direct and act in one's movie. I must meditate on this.
Meanwhile, Woody Allen is at it again, in a sequel of sorts to (or at least in the same vein of) Match Point. Yep yep, Ms Johannson is in it, getting her feet wet in the name of journalism.
Scarlett plays a goofy student out to get the scoop of her lifetime. Problem is, she melts into her subjects hands like the fluffy bowl of ice cream that she is. And no I'm not talking about Mr Allen, who seems to be dodging controversy in the name of realism.
So who would more realistically get in Ms Johannson's pants? Hugh Jackman, no less. That's one for Australia right there, and quite the hop skip jump from The Boy From Oz.
So Mr Lyman (Jackman) is suspected a serial killer by a journo - whom, upon investigation, falls for him. There's a whole lotta charm out here, but all I smell is money and a well-pruned backyard.
See, the only reason Lyman is interesting is because he could well be a serial killer. I just hope this cute and innocent journo doesn't end up with the same fate as that poor American Actress in the previous film.
Death seems inevitable. Thankfully, Woody put a bit more effort in to make the film droll. Although he is old hat in this matter, I find myself stuck in mid-80's Manhattan slowly warming myself to the fact that many of the comments made are quite funny.
So yes, the film is reminiscent of the Allen-Keaton era of displaying multiple talents through film. And Yay! Its not as predictable as I thought. As a plus, Ms Johannson seems to be one-upping Diane Keaton by being as punchy as Mr Allen.
3 and a half out of five. You'll have fun.

I've been wondering whether or not to see this film as I really liked Matchpoint. Like you said, it sort of sounds as though it's in a similar vein....and I like the idea of having in a film...
From the sounds of your review it sounds good but I think I'm leaning towards waiting for the DVD.....
Interesting point that I might ponder too:
To write, direct and act in one's movie. I must meditate on this.

Happy Easter.... I hope that it has been a good weekend for you.
I must admit I am not a Woody Allen fan... Matchpoint for me was a decent film... a sequel though? Dunno... sequels always ruin the experience don`t they? I think I`m with Tracy on this one and will wait for the DVD....
In the meantime when are you releasing that next Box Office Hit?

Kat,
Why the long face? I prefer not to incorporate ones professional life with their personal life.
Don't stop the funk...
Tracy,
I will meditate on it one day. Maybe synchronise it with you? But I am happy as a writer for now. My creative streak is still blossoming in that direction.
Ash,
How are ya sunshine?
Box office hit? Du-hu-hude, in Australia that means getting the film heard of outside your suburb.
Thanks for the expression of interest. I'm sure you know I find it flattering.
Rock on,
