The Rag Trade

October 26th 2007 03:35
We had both worked up to this moment. Although both of us were at seperate stages in life, we had the same thing on our mind.

She starts talking about her conservative view of having a man to support her financially throughout the family years. I comment that its about time the government supported young families through paid maternal leave etc. Unfortunately, she voted for this government.

Then the topic of an ex comes up, and she quips that she is simply a second hand rag that doesn't wear second hand clothes. Shit, what does that make me? I guess I can put it under the umbrella of wearing what suits me.

And no, I don't wear hand-me-downs. I've known certain people who do - ie wish to go out with an ex of mine, as to say that all that time of them complaining about said ex it turns out it was all bullshit and they just wanted me out of the way as to have her for themselves. Something like a one size fits all Armani suit.

Maybe it would be more accurate to see oneself as a second hand magic carpet. Something with experience that may take a while to adjust to its new high flying driver. You be the captain and I, as the magic carpet, will navigate. And provide you with something to rest with for those long boozy picnics at the park.

Metaphorical honesty is a bonus in any kind of relationship. Some plough through partners like a harvest, believing it to be honesty which relates them all. But you've GOT to understand - its not about having an honest personality, someone who is happy to give their honest opinion. That is the minimum. You need an honest character - someone who refuses to give you an idea about them that isn't true. Letting you know they can't always be trusted, they can't always be relied upon for the pressures we put on relationships, but will be happy to be there for you as long as they can be themselves at the same time.

Wow that paragraph was such a tall pair of pants there's loose seems at the bottom from its previous owner walking on them too much.

I say be proud to wear second hand clothes. Even though you don't know the previous owner, in such situations its a good thing to keep a bit of mystery in the air.
