The Season
February 11th 2011 23:11
Everyone comes out to play now.
We use all our stamina to make sure its the longest night of the year on Dec 31, make plans to be sure we're not thinking of the hangover for the next few days, and march on into the season as the get togethers and stufftodo's get done.
I could get all Julian Fellowes and traditional, determining it the time when all the aristocrats get their faces up in the gossip rags and papers with their parties and attention-seeking activities.
But these days that isn't necessary. With social and media networking sites now so big its basically the undercurrent of reasoning to every photo and video taken, we are all in starring roles in our own right.
Self confidence need no longer be an issue, but what about those of us who are actually doing things that deserve proper enlargement in the eyes of the public? How do we separate them from the diaspora of the cyberworld, and better yet determine if they're even worth checking out?
In this sense, independent radio plays the biggest part, followed closely by word of mouth and the usual getting out there to the gigs and shows just to find out what the hype, if there is any, is all about.
I can recommend, when in Sydney, to keep an eye out for Herb Rizla, Dialectrix, Def Wish Cast, BIngethinkers, That's Them, either in the street press or on the internet.
They all feature in this video, a promo for the freshly released Bingethinkers album. Check it out for a heads up on what's news in Aussie hiphop.
